Charles Field-Marsham, Chairman and Founder of Kestrel:
Charles Field-Marsham is a Canadian entrepreneur with more than 20 years of experience in building businesses in Africa. In 1991, he joined Credit Suisse First Boston in New York, he then lived and worked in Kenya between 1993 and 2003 where he started and acquired several businesses. In 2006, he founded Kestrel Capital Management Capital (KCMC), when he returned to Canada. KCMC provides consulting services to Charles’ businesses outside of Canada. Charles owns and is chairman of: Kestrel Capital, the leading broker in Kenya; Panafrican Group, the distributor of Komatsu equipment in five countries across East and West Africa; and Kenya Fluorspar, one of the largest and lowest cost producers of fluorspar in the world. Charles sits on the boards of The Foundation of the Hospital for Sick Children, Grand Challenges Canada, The Canadian Council on Africa, the African Medical Research Foundation Canada (AMREF) and The Next 36. Charles is also the principal benefactor and chairman of the Kenya Scholar Athlete Program (KENSAP)and The Charles and Rita Field-Marsham Foundation
Andre DeSimone, Executive Director and CEO: Andre was Chief Executive of Kestrel Capital in 1995 and played a pivotal role in developing the research tradition now associated with the firm. Prior to this, Andre worked for Blackstone Group L.P. in New York as Vice President specialising in acquisitions and restructuring. Between 1997 and 2001, Andre was a portfolio manager at Zurich Scudder Investments in New York where he co-managed a Global Emerging Markets Equity Fund. From 2001 to 2003, Andre was at Kenol/Kobil Petroleum where he was responsible for new acquisitions and oversight of subsidiaries outside Kenya. Andre has returned to Kestrel Capital as Executive Director. He holds a BSc in Management Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Andrew Mwangangi, Head of Fixed Income Sales & Trading: Andrew joined Kestrel Capital in 1995. Andrew is in charge of the operations department and leads the fixed income sales efforts, as well as the bond trading and commercial paper programs. Andrew holds a BA in Economics and Higher Diploma in Management Information Systems.
Samuel Wachira, Head of Equity Sales & Trading: Samuel joined Kestrel Capital in 1997. At Kestrel Capital, Samuel is responsible for the day to day execution of orders at the trading floor, for establishing working relationships with investors, and for ensuring smooth co-operation between the back office and the trading desk. He has a BA in Economics from the University of Nairobi and is currently pursuing an MBA in Finance at the same institution.
Abraham Too, Head of Operations: Abraham joined Kestrel Capital in 1996. Abraham is responsible for back office operations queries and ensures the firm’s compliance with regulations and assists in bond trading and commercial paper programs. Abraham is a CPA (K).
Christine Kuria, Equity Sales and Trading: Christine joined Kestrel Capital in 2004 having spent the prior seven years at Dry Associates where she gained extensive experience in structuring and selling fixed income products such as Commercial Paper and other corporate papers, as well as dealing in Treasury Bonds, foreign exchange and foreign mutual funds in Kenya. She has a BA in Economics and Political Science from the University of Nairobi.
Vera Mungai, Equity Sales and Trading: Vera joined Kestrel 2006 having spent several years at Jubilee Insurance. At Jubilee, Vera was responsible for managing the Uniflex life insurance product, pricing and risk analysis, among other responsibilities. Vera has a BSc in Actuarial Science from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK and is currently pursuing her Actuarial exams.
Joseph Thiga, Equity Sales & Trading/Operations:Joseph joined Kestrel Capital in 2004. Joseph handles the equity orders and liaises with trading department to ensure clients' instructions are executed and reported as appropriate, establishing working relationships with investors, and ensuring smooth co-operation between the back office and the trading desk. Joseph holds a Bsc in Mathematics from Moi University and an MBA in Finance at University Of Nairobi.
Sally Kotut, Equity Sales and Trading: Sally recently joined Kestrel from African Alliance where she worked as a Portfolio Manager. Sally holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree majoring in Accounts from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton and has passed Level I of the CFAÂ® Program. Sally has a client relations background and discretionary portfolio management.
Joy Migongo, Research Analyst: Joy joined the research team at Kestrel Capital in January, 2011 from Credit Reference Bureau of Africa where she worked as an Analyst. She has a Bachelor of Statistics degree from the University of Nairobi and is currently a level II candidate in the CFA® program. Joy covers the Banking, Media and Retail sectors while also handling Corporate Advisory work.
Kuria Kamau, Research Analyst: Kuria joined Kestrel Research in August 2012 from Old Mutual Securities where he held a similar position. He has a BSc. in Actuarial Science degree from the University of Nairobi and has passed the CFA Level 3 examinations and may qualify to be a Charter holder on completion the required experience. He is also an ACCA affiliate. Kuria covers EA Breweries, Safaricom, Equity Bank, BAT Kenya, Athi River Mining and KenGen. He also assists in Corporate Finance Advisory.
Linet Muriungi, Research Analyst: Linet joined the Kestrel Capital research team in 2012 from Strathmore University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Finance Option). Linet is pursuing ACCA papers and is currently a part 3 candidate. She has previously interned at Dyer and Blair Investment Bank working in the research department. Vidur Dhingra, Research Analyst: Vidur joined the research team at Kestrel Capital in 2013 from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where he graduated with a BSc in Accounting and Finance. Vidur has previously interned at State Street Global Advisors (UK), State Street Global Markets (UK), The Coca-Cola Company, Unilever, Colgate Palmolive and Reckitt Benckiser among others. Vidur is currently a CFA level 1 candidate and covers the Banking, Oil and Sugar Industries. He is also involved in Corporate Advisory work.
Ian Gachichio, Research Analyst: Ian joined the Kestrel Capital research team in 2013 having worked as the lead financial expert at a web-based finance magazine in Nairobi.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Strathmore University and is currently a CFA level 1 candidate.
Ian covers the banking, insurance and investment sectors and handles Kestrel's Daily Notes and Weekly Commentary.
